In my previous post, Live on Purpose: Habits that will transform you life, pt 1, I wrote how life is fueled by purpose. Jesus lived a sent life. He found energy in doing what His Father had sent Him to do. We also find energy when we are doing the things that we are passionate about.
I introduced the idea that Jesus exercised certain life habits that helped keep Him focused on His purpose. The first two were:
- Show Compassion – serving others keeps us from becoming self-centered
- Eat Together – sharing a meal builds and deepens relationships
You can read about them in the other post…
The next habit is Interact with the Bible.
The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to us
When I was a new believer, I practically knew nothing about God. But I was given a simple process to help me study the Bible. It transformed my life. First it changed the way I thought about life. Then it changed the way I was living it!
Throughout my 35+ years of following Jesus, I have found the Bible to be living and active. It has given me insight into God and to other people. It has also given me great insight into myself. When I went through a life changing event, my life was turned upside down. The one thing I refused to believe was that God had given up on me. So I turned to the Bible and found hope, strength and a will to go on.
I have also learned that when people come to me for help, the best thing I can give them is the gift of listening and then taking them through some scriptures that speak to their situation.
The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to us. It shows us who He is and what He values. It also communicates His love for us and His plan for dealing with this broken world.
Rather than spend time explaining why we can trust the Bible. I want to share with you a simple process to help you get the most out of the Bible for your life (taken from James 1:19-25):
- Be quick to listen
- Be slow to speak
- Be quiet in your spirit
- These first three ideas help us get into a teachable place
- Repent
- This means to change the way you think “get rid of the moral filth” and “humbly accept the Word”
- Take Action
- Read it
- Study it
- Mediatate on it
- Memorize it
- Apply it
We have found that if you only engage scripture once or twice a week it will rarely have any affect on your life. But if you interact with scripture at least four times a week you will begin to see it transform your life.
If you would like a practical worksheet to help you use this simple process, please contact me and I will be happy to send one to you.
